How a gas water heater works is simple. You basically have a very big tank. In this particular case, it’s a 50 gallon gas water heater. The way it operates is the cold water comes into the unit right here, and on the inside of this tank is a tube called the dip tube which pushes the cold water to the bottom of the water heater where the thermostat is located. In return, that’s forcing the hot water out of this pipe here.
The purpose of a thermostat on a water heater is to measure the temperature of the water. What that means is when the water inside the unit cools down below the level that you have the unit set at, the thermostat will then turn on, turn the gas on and fire the unit which will then reheat water.
