Don’t Purchase and Install The Wrong Lighting Fixtures

<_>

What makes a home beautiful? Is it the flooring underneath? Is it the decor? Is it the accessories that blend in and set the tone? Or is it your lighting?

Not only is lighting used for illuminating your room, but the right lighting fixtures can also be used to create ambiance throughout. Before purchasing any new lighting fixture, there are a few questions you should ask before you make your choices.Don’t Purchase and Install The Wrong Lighting Fixtures

Is freestanding or attached best?

Lighting can be freestanding – a lamp on a table – or attached, such as a ceiling fan or chandelier hanging from your ceiling. Attached offers a more permanent light source in the room and can ensure full coverage lighting. You can then use lamps for source light where you need it most.

What is the voltage?

Most fixtures have a line voltage. Some lights – track lighting and under-cabinet lighting – operate off low voltage, which requires you to have a transformer installed.

How much does the lighting fixture weigh?

While you may love the looks of the chandelier or fan you have picked out, will the weight cause a problem? This is very important to keep in mind as you shop. If you are replacing an existing fixture, choosing one equally proportioned should ensure the area is properly secured for the weight. However, it’s always wise to have an electrician evaluate the area and ensure the junction box can handle the increased strain.

Is the light fixture at the right height?

Light fixtures often have the ability to be adjusted depending on height. A light should be installed differently with an eight foot ceiling compared to a ceiling at fourteen or fifteen feet. Fixtures typically are supplied with wire, chain, or separate downrods to help you install your light at the proper height.

How large are the canopy or backplates?

Canopies are the decorative plates that are mounted to the ceiling, while a backplate is used when installing wall lights. These pieces should be large enough to cover the hole that is drilled to install the lighting fixture. It’s especially important to measure pre-existing holes to ensure the light you choose will fully cover the hole.

What is the wattage of the fixture?

Are you looking for ambient lighting or something that lights the room? Fixtures are approved for use with bulb wattage limits. Do not use bulbs above the approved wattage limit, as it runs the risk of serious damage or even fire. Also, make a note of what type of bulb is needed: incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, and LED are all common options. They can be important especially as new technology is put into play.
