You can’t control the weather. But you can ensure your generator is ready whenever bad weather strikes.
Generators are handy to have around in case of emergency. But if it isn’t operating properly or you’re not sure if you’re using it safely, it can do you harm.
Here are four tips to keep in mind.
Keep It Cool
Depending on the type of generator you have and how long you use it, you may need to refuel. Be sure to allow it to cool down before you refuel it. Cooling down reduces the risk of allowing the unit to overheat.
Avoid Enclosed Areas
Generators need a well-ventilated area to operate safely. When using it, ensure you have plenty of space around the generator, and that space is well-ventilated to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Plug In The Right Way
Never plug in a generator into a standard wall outlet. This can cause risk to the surrounding areas that use the same transformer. Ensure you have a dedicated outlet for your most energy-sucking appliances and equipment to ensure the overall safety of your home.
Keep It Dry
Your generator should always be placed in an area that is dry and not susceptible to moisture or flooding. Be sure to wipe away water when in use. Avoid using it in standing water.
