When it’s time to shop, we all think in terms of brand. Honda versus BMW. Walmart versus Nordstroms. We choose brands for a variety of reasons. In some cases, we use branding to make a statement. In some cases, we choose a brand because of its benefits or features.
Selecting a brand is often an easy process. Mac or PC? Your mind instantly drifts to one or the other. Brand matters.
But what about when you have no idea?
If you’re shopping for a new HVAC system, what brand should you select? Are you even aware of HVAC brands are available? Do a little investigating online, and you can quickly come up with a list. But there are a lot of things to consider.
And what if you don’t have a lot of time to consider? If your furnace isn’t working, or your air conditioner is broken, the fix may need immediate attention. Your equipment may be old and no longer worth the effort of repairing. What should you know about HVAC brands?
Many manufactures operate under several names. Major brands tend to have secondary lines to offer lower grades of equipment, commonly referred to contractor grade. As with all purchases, you tend to get what you pay for, lower quoted equipment tend to have cheaper parts and shorter warranties.
You’ll find brands like:
- Lennox
- Trane and American Standard
- Carrier, Payne, Bryant and Tempstar
- Goodman and Amana
And when it gets down to the components that create the equipment under each brand, the major brand companies tend to use: Emerson, Johnson Controls, and Honeywell, all high quality parts. The off brands will utilize lesser quality parts and tend to fail sooner.
Because the major brands are all billion dollar businesses, they all utilize rigid quality processes during production. Which means the equipment and products produced is ultimately closely comparable.
So what’s the difference with major brands?
The contractor.
Unlike your purchases of clothing or a car, you aren’t purchasing a product you can pick up and take home with you to operate on your own. HVAC equipment is something that has specific guidelines for installation. Mess that up, and your entire system could be faulty from the beginning, no matter how effective your equipment is. The installation day is the most important day of the equipment’s life.
