You can’t go into any home improvement store or flip through a decorating magazine without noticing how LED lighting has taken the industry by storm. LED bulbs are quickly becoming the lightbulb of choice as the technology continues to build.
And that’s a good thing. LED lighting helps reduce energy demands and can bring us a more sustainable future.
But many people have noticed discomfort from prolonged use with LED technology. It’s similar to headaches and eye strain you experience from too much computer work. It’s called photosensitivity and it affects millions of people.
It isn’t life-threatening. But it is something to be taken seriously. Especially as we incorporate more LED lighting into our workplaces.
Light sensitivity symptoms vary from person to person. They can include:
- Eye discomfort
- Excessive blinking
- Eye burning or watering
- Eye inflammation
- Headaches or migraines
- Dizziness
- Light intolerance
There is no treatment for LED light sensitivity. However, as a property manager or business owner, there are things you can do to decrease the chances of photosensitivity within the workplace.
Lower light intensity. You can accomplish this by adding dimmer switches throughout your building to allow people to adjust the light levels to their liking. Or simply purchase a lower lumen bulb.
Buy a warmer toned bulb. The good news with LED technology is you have many options when purchasing a bulb. Try a warmer, yellow hue and see what it does for you.
Buy a smart bulb. You’ll be amazed at the number of controls available using LED technology. Experiment with different lighting intensities, many of which can be controlled through your smart devices.
