When it’s time to upgrade the insulation in your home, you have several choices. If you’re looking to replace or add to the insulation in your attic, you might look at loose-fill or blown-in insulation, as well as other choices, including fiberglass batt or blown-in fiberglass. But if you’re adding insulation to enclosed walls, blown-in cellulose insulation is the most practical and economical way to go.
Blown-in cellulose insulation is created from wood — it’s a paper-based product that is thick and dense and packs together in much the same way feathers do in your favorite down comforter. Blown-in cellulose works well because it can fit into any area and conforms around any obstructions already in place, such as pipes for plumbing or wires for electricity.
Typically, cellulose is made from paper products. Depending on the manufacturer, it’s often made from recycled newspapers, cardboard, office paper, and other recycled paper, making it eco-friendly too.
Blown-in cellulose insulation works well because you can add it anywhere in your home. Behind walls, a hole will be drilled into the drywall to allow the special blower nozzle access behind the walls. In attics, it’s as simple as gaining access to the attic space and using the blower nozzle to add insulation in and around the joists. You can add blown-in insulation over the top of existing insulation, provided it’s in good shape, all leaks are sealed, and biological growth isn’t in place.
Blown-in cellulose is installed dry. Once the proper holes are drilled, bales of cellulose are fed into an insulation blower that will fluff up the cellulose as it’s being blown into place. It’s applied through an application nozzle that allows the installer to blow the insulation into place. The cellulose is then allowed to settle naturally. Holes are filled, walls are patched, and your home is a more comfortable place to live.
Cellulose continues to be one of the best ways to add insulation to your existing home.
By blowing it in, it can settle and conform anywhere. That means no matter what you’ve added since your home was originally built, no matter what obstruction is in place in your attic or behind walls, cellulose will fill in the spaces and create a tighter seal.
Because it’s made from recycled materials, it’s one of the most inexpensive ways to improve the comfort levels of your home. Add in that it’s also one of the most eco-friendly options out there, and it’s easy to see why it continues to be a popular way of insulating your home.
